How to Use

Chios Mastic

In Greek is called Masticha, is a resin obtained from the mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus). In pharmacies and natural product shops, it can be found as “Arabic gum” (not to be confused with gum arabic) and “Yemen gum”. In Greece, it is known as the “tears of Chios”. It is solely produced in Chios island, and like other natural resins, it is produced in “tears” or droplets. It bears a granted protected designation of origin under European Law. The island’s mastic production is controlled by a co-operative of medieval villages, collectively known as the “Mastichochoria” (Μαστιχοχώρια), which is also located in southern Chios.
