Tanned skin has a rich history in ancient practices, symbolizing vitality, status, and connection to the natural world. Across cultures, from ancient Egypt to Greece and beyond, achieving a bronzed complexion was often associated with outdoor labor, suggesting strength and resilience. In ancient Rome, tanned skin became a mark of affluence, signifying leisure time spent in the sun. Methods for tanning varied, with some cultures using natural oils and herbs to enhance the bronzing process, while others employed sunbathing rituals for both cosmetic and therapeutic purposes. Regardless of the method, the pursuit of a golden glow in ancient times reflected a deep cultural appreciation for the beauty of sun-kissed skin and its enduring allure.
Hero Ingredients
DHA: A 100% natural autobronzant that reacts with amines, peptides and amino acids in the upper layer of the epidermis to form brown compounds, responsible for the observed coloration. This is the same type of reaction between reducing sugars and proteins as the “Maillard reactions” responsible for browning or “caramelization” of food during cooking. This mechanism is completely different from the mechanism of natural tanning (production of melanin) and the “tan” obtained with DHA will therefore not protect the skin from the sun.
Sunflower Oil: A light-weight oil that is extremely rich in Vitamin E. It supports moisture retention and softens skin. Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil doesn't leave behind an oily residue and it also helps in forming a natural barrier on the outermost layer of the skin in order to protect it from damage. The presence of antioxidants like Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Vitamin E plus nutrients like Copper, Palmitic acid, Omega-6 fatty acids, Iron, Calcium and Zinc, makes it an excellent anti-aging ingredient because it manages to protect the skin from free radical damage as well as sun damage. As a result, the wrinkles and fine lines are diminished and the skin gets a youthful and radiant complexion. Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil also contains oleic and linoleic acids, ingredients that boost the production of cells and have a calming effect on the skin. The natural occurrence of carotenoids in Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil also makes it an excellent solution for people suffering with acne.
Shea Butter: has a high level of cinnamic acid, a natural sun screen. It contains unsaturated fats with a large proportion of “unsaponifiables” components, essential fatty acids, phytosterols, vitamin E and D, provitamin A and allantoin.
Under My Skin
How does DHA (dihydroxyacetone) interact with the skin to produce a tan?
DHA interacts specifically with the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the epidermis. When applied to the skin, DHA reacts with amino acids present in the proteins of this layer, resulting in a chemical reaction known as the Maillard reaction. This reaction causes a browning effect on the skin, mimicking the appearance of a natural tan. Importantly, DHA does not penetrate beyond the stratum corneum, ensuring that it does not have any adverse effects on deeper layers of the skin. As the outer layer of the skin naturally sheds through desquamation, the tan produced by DHA gradually fades over time, typically lasting 3-10 days.
How long after tanning will I see results?
Gradual tanning lotion worksby reacting with the amino acids in the top layer of your skin, which causes it to darken. The colour change is gradual, as the DHA takes time to develop. This means that you can control the depth of your tan by applying the product once or twice a day until you reach your desired shade.
How often can I use tanning lotion?
Applying a daily sunless tanner (recommendedevery 3-5 days for maintenance or once a week if you adore your color) can help you maintain an even tan.
